Critique or Catalyst? Inspiration, Connection & Cause.

This is a partner article for my response to Joy Behar and Jimmy Kimmel with regard to the stigma of mental illness. This page will include video clips and an explanation of the background to the original article would be posted. Basically, two political commentators made disparaging remarks about mental illness. Joy Behar compared the Vice President Mike Pence to someone with a mental illness, because a very common way for Christians to speak is "G-d called me to this cause, position, job, ect." Ms. Behar equated the Christian faith to mental illness when she said, "I dont want a VP who hears voices."

To her credit she apologized, both to him directly and publicly on her show.

Jimmy Kimmel, around that same time, equated mental illness with having a dangerous or irresponsible opinion on public policy with regard to access to firearms. Following the tragic shooting in Parkland, Florida, he declared on his show, that  President Trump is correct in saying that gun violence is an issue of mental illness in the USA, because if the President does not change the gun laws to be more restrictive, than he is demonstrating that he, Donald Trump, has a mentally illness.

My article is a response to both of them. It kind of evolved from a comment I posted on Joy Behar's comment box which was uploaded to my Facebook page. My friend and mentor, Olive Wilson, commented to me privately how inspired she was my my message. Several weeks later, I mentioned this article to an Art Therapist who I work with; she then asked and encouraged me to translate the post so that she can share it with her coworkers, her fellow graduate students and maybe even promote my skills as a public speaker, advocate and spokesperson for individuals with mental illness.

I am grateful for all the people involved in creating this article, including Joy Behar and Jimmy Kimmel: the catalysts.

Check out the 2:30 mark.

Check out 3:10. The ladies of the view were discussing a comment from a fired Trump aide who said: "Don't wish for Trump's impeachment, his replacement, Pence, would be worse."
She criticized his devotion and faith as a reason. This was the premise of the discussion that followed.

Check out the following video that discusses the event in greater detail.

Here is the first response to the criticism and clarification.

Fox News discussed and reports on the apology.
